COYAD (Council of Youth Anti-Drug) had one more step closer to make the future generation to be cleaner. All the members, including Lydia Lim and students, gathered at COYAD. The meeting was about communicating with listeners for ‘Effective Communication Session 2’ and inhalants for ‘Drug Prevention.’ In the last meeting (July 8, 2023), Lydia Lim gave a speech about ‘Effective Communication Session 1’, which was mainly about body language. On August 5, 2023, COYAD gathered from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. Ms.Lim introduced ‘Effective Communication Session 2’ and ‘Drug Prevention.’ In this meeting, she shared what are good communication techniques. It was mainly about communicating with listeners so that they could understand the topic easily and using rhetorical appeals. Rhetorical appeals are about an ethos, which appeal to ethics and give credibility to the speaker. She even mentioned, “Rhetorical appeals work best when used in combination.” The instructor noticed that pathos appeals to emotions and logos appeals to logic using evidence and facts. The strongest appeal is when pathos is used in moderation, but overuse of pathos actually can make pathos ineffective. To be an effective listener, we first have to make eye contact, and ask relevant questions, but we should not deflect discussion to another topic. For her conclusion, effective communication is listening with the whole body, showing respect for both speakers and listeners, and using a neutral position when speaking. At the end of the meeting, Lydia Lim gave time to practice the skills of speech. Ms. Lim gave an opportunity to students to give a quick speech about small and big definitions of happiness. She also gave another option for the students to choose the topic. When a student was giving a speech, other students gave a glow and grow rating, which is the positive and negative sides of the speech. Getting the glow and grow, students grasped a reflection of themselves about what they learned from the speech activity. ![]() ▲Students at the COYAD Youth Forum Leadership Training Program. The instructor said, “Inhalants are chemicals that are found in everyday household products that some people use to get high.” Since the items are found easily, people don’t think they are dangerous, but they can be harmful to fragile the brain. Lighters, nail polish remover, spray paint, and hair spray are all inhalants. People carelessly use inhalants through their nose or mouth which is called “sniffing,” “snorting,” or “huffing.” Since they only last a few seconds or minutes, the users repeatedly use them to feel a longer high. The instructor emphasized how to communicate well and alerted the classes to the danger of using inhalants, which don’t look like drugs. COYAD wants to make the next generation healthy and clean. |
